A prayer vigil was held in the memory of Ernest Graves, Sunday night at 6 pm., on the corner of Albert Ave. and Andrews St.   Ernest Graves died last Wednesday while in Police custody, shortly after police Tasered him three times.  The Police Department is reviewing the actions of the officers involved, and the cause of Graves’ death is unclear at this point.

The vigil was organized by the Malcolm X Islamic Center (MXIC) of Rockford, IL, and took place outside the house of Graves’ mother.  Nearly one hundred people attended the vigil.  Several speakers, including family and friends, shared their memories of Ernest with those in attendance.  The speakers emphasized the need for everyone to come together in prayer, peace and pursuit of justice.

Remarks Delivered at a Muslim-Christian Wedding PDF Print E-mail

Islam, like other religions, puts a special God-human relationship at its very heart.  In its vertical dimension, this unique relationship entails that humans revere God; in its horizontal dimension it entails that humans treat one another with equality, compassion and justice.  Muslims insist that only in the proper dispensing of these complementary obligations, toward God, toward oneself and toward other humans, can we realize our full potential, both as individuals and as communities.  These obligations, then, naturally, lead to the fundamental concept of individual moral responsibility and accountability before God.

It is also in the context of these complementary obligations that the institution of marriage finds its full significance in Islam.  In the coming together of the “pair”[1] and in the potential “propagation from the two,”[2] marriage seems to straddle both the deeply personal and visibly social aspects of human life, at one and the same time.

Neighborhood BBQ and Clothes Giveaway PDF Print E-mail

MXIC 'Clothes Giveaway'

The Malcolm X Islamic Center (MXIC) held its first “Neighborhood BBQ and Clothes Giveaway” on Saturday, April 26th, from 2 pm to 6 pm. This event was held in the parking lot of the Family Dollar store right across from the Malcolm X Center (corner of Broadway and Kishwaukee) and was very well received by the neighborhood community. According to our estimates, more than 200 people showed up to pick out adult, youth and children’s clothes, shoes, sheets, etc., and enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ chicken and desserts. In fact, this number was about twice as large as what we had projected. By the grace of God, however, we had more than enough clothes and food to handle the much larger than expected crowd.

The community in the Kishwaukee Corridor - bounded by the Rock River, 11th Street, 18th Avenue and East State Street – consists of diverse neighborhoods of Black, Hispanic and White working families that have been struggling over the years in a pervasive environment of disinvestment in our urban city centers. But times are especially hard during this current economic downturn. While we, at the Malcolm X Center understand the structural issues – political, economic, social and cultural – that need to be acknowledged and addressed, and while we continue to highlight some of these issues and work with others to change them, we also clearly recognize the urgent help that working families in our neighborhoods need on a daily basis to stay afloat. This "Neighborhood BBQ and Clothes Giveaway" was our humble way of helping such families in need.
